The diary describes a journey from St. Louis to Texas, where cattle was gathered, and then to Los Angeles, from December 1852 to November 1853. A second journey is described beginning with a sea voyage to Portland in December 1856, where stock was gathered, and a cattle drive ending in California in the spring of 1858. Dallam describes stays in winter camps and San Francisco, and vigilante activity there. There are the original articles of agreement between Dallam and George Wentworth.
